The dramatic temperature fluctuations and unbroken flatness of the tidelands generate powerful winds which whip salt and other particulate into the air at high speeds, carrying them great distances. Fortunately, the winds are predictable, alternating blowing landwards and seawards with periods of stillness throughout the day.

Tidal nomads time their travels to move with the winds, rather than against them; some clans even take advantage of the winds by using sailsledges. To combat the effects of the wind, nomads often apply thick, oil-based salves around the mucous membranes to trap particles and seal in moisture and wear tightly secured veils to shield the face.
