verdigris

As a result of their high amount of dissolved copper, the mineral-rich hot springs of the archipelago leave a blue-green tint on the skin of bathers. This color, poking out from beneath a neckline, sleeve cuff, or hem, has become a status symbol among the agrarians, as it indicates the individual has good hygiene and the access and leisure time for frequent, prolonged soaks. Those without such access or leisure time mimic the effect with dyes applied to the skin of their collar, ankles, and wrists; blue-green designs on the cuffs/hems of their clothing; or jewelry made from oxidized copper and green stone.

Additionally, it has become popular to apply an exfoliating paste of vinegar and herbs prior to bathing. In addition to some cosmetic benefits, this increases the acidity of the skin and encourages the formation of the tint within a shorter period of time.
