spined eel

ALT ALT

The spined eel is a sea-dweller native to Europa. It is rarely seen by humans, with most information about them coming from corpses left behind at tidefall. Thanks to the desiccating effects of the sun and salt, these specimens provide an inaccurate estimation of their morphology at best. This is a pity, because in their natural habitat they are striking creatures; when whipping through the water at extremely high speeds, their massive mouth is closed and their frills of spines are laid flat, rendering them nothing more than a wavering line of darkness. As they approach their prey their spines and mouth snap open, slowing their approach and creating a vacuum that draws their unfortunate target backwards, respectively.

In addition to hydrodynamics, their rigid frilled spines are used for defense and mating. They fan them out in impressive displays and use them to spar with potential competitors.
