mud flea

A tiny, multilegged insect with an exoskeleton of brown, chitinous plates.

A tiny insectoid creature native to Europa who evolved from sea-dwelling plankton to take advantage of the newly-formed tidelands. They burrow through the mud, seeking out their surface-dwelling prey.

Once invigorated by its meal, the flea mates with its companions and lays hundreds of eggs in the body cavity of the dead limpet, dying shortly after. Within the body of the limpet, the eggs are protected from predators and the harsh environmental conditions of the tidelands, and the larvae have plentiful food when they hatch. The newly hatched larvae feast, growing quickly, then burrow back into the mud where they pupate. They remain dormant beneath the mud until warmed by the sun during tidefall, at which point they emerge as adult fleas and seek out their stationary prey en masse, beginning the cycle anew.
