long jelly

ALT

A siphonophorae open_in_new -like creature that lives in the shallows of Europa’s seas. It’s “body” is relatively small in comparison to its thin, filament-like “tentacles”, which can be miles long. These venomous tentacles create a deadly, near-invisible net as they drift along, entangling and killing any creature unfortunate enough to wander into it. The jelly, alerted to the presence like a spider on a web, moves slowly towards their prey and begins to digest it using enzyme secretions.

Though they usually prey on other sea-dwelling creatures, their tentacles are often left stretched across miles of tidebed as the tidefall carries their body out to sea. The tentacles are no less deadly when dry, and the jelly has no qualms about consuming prey unfortunate enough to stumble over them when its body returns with the tiderise.

These tentacles pose a problem to the tidal nomads, who either have to navigate around the miles-long obstacle, or carefully traverse across it. If touched with bare skin, the venom causes excruciating pain and leads to death within hours. Vinegar deactivates the stinging cells and can temper the severity of the reaction if applied within seconds, increasing the chances of survival; however, the victim may wish they were dead as the venom courses its way through their body, often leaving significant organ damage in its wake and crippling the victim for life.
