living soil

Worms wriggle through dark, rich soil held in cupped hands.

One of earth’s most valuable exports was soil rich in native nutrients, microbes, insects, and worms. While abundant on the planet’s surface, this resource was critical to establishing earth-like agriculture on Mars and later, Europa.

In transit, this soil is kept in pressurized, temperature-controlled shipping containers to protect its delicate microbiome from contamination or exposure to the cold vacuum of space.
